モーニング娘。オリジナルメンバー。中澤裕子と並んでユニットに参加していない。（シャッフルを除く）
このことが、安倍を「モーニング娘。の象徴」とされるゆえんを一層際立たせている。
ユニットには所属していないながら、アルバム「プッチベスト」では「トウモロコシと空と風」を１人で歌い、
2000年02月08日から同曲をイメージソングとしてカネボウの高級シャンプー「ＳＡＬＡ」のＣＭに出演。
透明感のある演出と歌声は、ファンだけでなく高く評価された。
他にもソロワークとして多数のドラマに出演、演技力にも定評がある。
2004年01月25日、横浜アリーナのハロプロ冬のコンサートでモーニング娘。を卒業。
2006年05月、フジ「芸能界を変えた男・渡辺晋物語」で、ザ・ピーナッツ役として出演。
2006年11月、ミュージカル「白蛇伝～White Lovers～」で主演を務める。
2008年03月～05月、舞台「祝祭音楽劇トゥーランドット」（宮本亜門演出）にリュー役として出演。
2008年08月、松山千春の63rdシングル「思ひ」のプロモーションビデオにゲスト出演。
2009年03月31日、ハロー!プロジェクトを卒業。
2015年12月29日、ミュージカル「嵐が丘」で共演した俳優の山崎育三郎（やまざきいくさぶろう）と結婚。
Abe Natsumi is one of the five original members of Morning Musume.
She often took the lead in songs, on occasion singing the entire lead vocal with the other girls acting as backup singers.
Abe has never been a part of a Morning Musume subgroup but has led each shuffle group she has been in.
She was also the lead of Morning Musume Sakuragumi（さくら組：Cherry Unit）
until her graduation at the end of the Hello! Project Winter tour on January 25, 2004.
On July 27, Hello！Project Concert Tour 2003 Summer, Thunk made a sudden announcement
that Abe Natsumi will be graduating from Morning Musume at the end of their 2004 Winter tour.
This shocking news threw the whole audience filled with 10,000 people into an uproar.
On August 13, 2003, She released her first single, "22 Sai no Watashi（22歳の私：My 22-Year Old Self）", just a few days after her 22nd birthday.
Her first full length album, "Hitoribotchi（一人ぼっち：All Alone）", was released on February 4, 2004,
containing many solo versions of Morning Musume songs.
In April 2004 , Abe Natsumi played a heroine in NTV's dorama series “Koinu no Warutsu（仔犬のワルツ：Puppy Waltz）”
She acted as a blind girl with brilliant piano playing.
On August 24, 2004, she also became a member of the Hello! Project special unit Nochiura Natsumi with Matsuura Aya and Goto Maki.
In late 2004, there was a plagiarism scandal with some of her essays and poems in her photobooks which were copied off works by other artists,
and she took personal leave for three months.
During that time she ceased participation from all Hello! Project related activities, including Iida Kaori 's graduation concert in January 2005.
As a result, an album scheduled for release in early 2005 was canceled.
A single named "Nariyamanai Tambourine（鳴り止まないタンバリン：Tambourine that Won't Stop Ringing）"
that was supposed to be released on January 26, 2005 was also canceled
（instead, "Yume Naraba（夢ならば：As Long As It's a Dream）" took its place in April 2005）.
She returned in February 2005, and has been participating in Hello! Project activities once again, most notably the Nochiura Natsumi's tour.
In May 2006, Abe Natsumi and her sister, Abe Asami, appeared in Fuji TV drama titled "The Hit Parade～A Man Who Changed the Entertainment World,
Watanabe Shin Story～（ザ・ヒットパレード～芸能界を変えた男・渡辺晋物語～）" They acted as 1960's Japanese pop duo "The Peanuts（ザ・ピーナッツ）".
In early 2007, Abe was chosen to be a member of Morning Musume Tanjō 10 Nen Kinentai
（モーニング娘。誕生10年記念隊：Morning Musume 10th Anniversary Group）,
a unit created to celebrate Morning Musume's 10th anniversary as a group.
Morning Musume Tanjō 10 Nen Kinentai also consists of Iida Kaori , Goto Maki , Niigaki Risa and Kusumi Koharu .
Their first single, "Bokura ga Ikiru My Asia（僕らが生きる MY ASIA：We're Alive MY ASIA）" was released on January 24, 2007.
It was announced on October 19, 2008, on the official Hello! Project website, that Abe will graduate from Hello! Project
along with the rest of Elder Club on March 31, 2009.
In January 2011, it was announced that Abe Natsumi was going to form a new group named "Dream Morning Musume"
with several other former Morning Musume members.

1997年04月在东京电视台节目“ASAYAN”中举办的“射乱Q摇滚女主唱选拔赛”中落选。
与另外四名落选参与者——中泽裕子、石黑彩、饭田圭织、福田明日香完成在五日内销售出五万张单曲唱片“爱之种”的条件，组成早安少女组｡
1998年01月28日作为早安少女组。成员之一以首张单曲“早安咖啡”出道。
1998年12月31日获得第40届日本唱片大赏的“最优秀新人赏”，并初次出场第49届红白歌唱大赛。
2001年01月13日首次以个人身份参与电视连续剧“爱犬ROSHINANTE的灾难”（日本电视台）演出。
2003年01月29日担任“早安少女组。樱花组”的初代队长。
2003年08月13日以“22岁的我”一曲单飞出道。
2004年01月25日安倍夏美在春季演唱会结束后毕业单飞，当年轰动一时的毕业演唱会，80万日币的黄牛票价，让她一举打破日本有史来纪录。
2004年02月04日首次主演的音乐剧“你回来了”开始演出（东京、大阪、名古屋）
2004年04月17日首次主演电视连续剧“小狗华尔滋”（日本电视台）。
2004年08月24日与后藤真希及松浦亚弥组成“后浦夏美”。

2004年12月01日盗用他人作词一事经网路上部分歌迷指出后被发觉。虽然版权所有者一方并未提出追诉，还是接受谨慎处分。
因此事的影响而退出参加红白歌唱大赛。
2005年09月05日与后藤真希、松浦亚弥、石川梨华组成“DEF.DIVA”。
2005年10月19日“DEF.DIVA”发行单曲“喜欢太多 就像傻瓜”。
2006年5月26日安倍夏美演出富士电视台电视剧「The Hit Parade 改变艺能界的男人～渡边晋物语」。
在剧里同妹妹安倍麻美一起扮演往时的有名双生歌手「The Peanuts」。
2006年11月08日由安倍夏美主演的舞台剧“白蛇传～White Love～”在东京Theatre银座剧场首演
2007年01月24日作为“早安少女组。诞生10年纪念队”成员之一，发行单曲“我们所生存的 MY ASIA”。
2008年03月27日安倍夏美参与演出的祝祭音乐剧“图兰朵（Turandot）”在东京赤阪ACT剧院首演。
2009年03月31日从早安家族毕业。
