アメリカの歌手、ギタリスト、ソングライターで、1960年代にフォークおよびロック音楽を先導したパイオニア的存在。

1962年に発表した「風に吹かれて」が反戦歌として広くうたわれ、プロテストソングの旗手となったが、60年代半ばからロックの要素を大幅にとりいれ、フォーク・ロックの先鞭(せんべん)をつけた。
アクの強い声と唱法、社会性や新しい感性をそなえた歌詞など、彼の音楽は多くのソングライターに多大な影響をあたえている。
